The Basics! Skin Types!

It is important that you know the type of skin you have so that you'll know how to take good care of it. And also to know what are the best products to use to handle your skin type. Knowing your skin type will not only help you save money over products your skin type doesn't need but also save you time and inconvenience from trying these products you don't really need.

In my case, I have a combination skin. My t-zone is very oily but the sides of my mouth are dry and the rest of my skin is normal. I am actually having hard time dealing with it before and it took me quite some time to figure my skin type until I attended my make-up class.

I have always been a fan of moisturizer even before I know the benefits I get from it. I just like using moisturizer because it makes my skin soft and prevent my skin from looking dull. The problem, however, is that my face has become so oily because I didn't know my skin type then and I didn't know that there is a specific product for my type of skin.

This particular entry is about the different types of skin (face), what are its characteristics, what your skin needs, and what I think the best type of foundation to use for a particular type of skin.

I will not, however, go into details about the products that your skin need or the details of the foundation for your skin type because I will make a separate entry for that.

We all know what skin is but to further explain it check this link...

Review! YSL L'Homme Eau De Toilette!

Disclaimer: I'm in no means a perfume expert. I only rely on how I feel and think about the scent, on how I like the scent and on how the scent tickles my senses.

My love for perfume was heavily influenced by a classmate (Edgar) in college who wear different perfumes everyday. I noticed that wearing perfume help Edgar look confident and my lady classmates love to be around him all the time. Maybe because he smells good and looks clean all the time.

I used to accompany Edgar in malls just testing and trying out perfumes. At first it got my nose runny after a few tries when a lady in the counter noticed me she had me smell coffee in between perfumes so I could reboot my nose and will not mistake one scent from another.

Since I have no means buying perfume in college, I usually saved up the stipend I got from my scholarships so I could buy stuff and perfume is one of them. The first two perfumes that I got are Acqua di Giò Pour Homme by Giorgio Armani and Clinique Happy for Men.

Anyway, here is my review on YSL's L'Homme Eau De Toilette:

Perfume: L'Homme Eau De Toilette
Brand: YSL (Yves Saint Laurent)
For: Men
Price: $78.00 for 3.3 Fl. Oz - 100 ml

My YSL L'Homme bottle.

I got mine in Hong Kong last 2010. I was not planning to buy any perfume that day; I just accompanied my mom while she shops around. Then I saw the golden colored liquid inside the golden colored covered glass on a perfume counter. The sight of the bottle was so hard to resist so I asked the lady in the counter to let me test and smell the perfume. She let me hold the bottle (it's the 100 ml bottle) and it feels just right in my palm. Not too heavy but enough to hold paper as paperweight. The moment I smelt the perfume, the top note got me and all my resistance were gone. I had to get it. I bought it that instant. I like it so much that I had to request for a traveler's size which the lady in the counter gave me for free. *wink wink*

Me waiting for my food in HK night market.

With Mom and little bro in Macau.

Size of 100 ml bottle when held

What YSL tells about it?
A fresh and woody fragrance that plays on contrasts and leaves a magnetic, sensual trail. A fresh and sparkling opening. An elegant and modern character, made of floral and spicy notes. A woody ambery structure, deeply masculine. Notes of Bergamot, Ginger and Vetiver make this a must-have fragrance.
Notes:

Bergamot, Cedar, Ozonic Notes, White Ginger, Basil Flower, White Pepper, Violet Leaves, Cedarwood, Haiti Vetiver, Tonka Bean.

Ingredients:

ALCOHOL. AQUA (WATER). PARFUM (FRAGRANCE). ETHYLHEXYL METHOXYCINNAMATE. LIMONENE. BUTYL METHOXYDIBENZOYLMETHANE. BUTYLPHENYL METHYLPROPIONAL. TRIS(TETRAMETHYLHYDROXYPIPERIDINOL) CITRATE. LINALOOL. COUMARIN. PROPYLENE GLYCOL. GERANIOL. ALPHA-METHYL IONONE. CITRAL. DISODIUM EDTA. CI 15985 (YELLOW 6). CI 19140 (YELLOW 5).

A lot of product left. A little goes a long way.

What I think about it?

Top note:

The mix of Ginger, Citrus and spicy ingredient (pepper maybe?) are very evident and well balance. The moment I smelled the perfume, I knew I had to get it. The scent makes me think of champagne, I feel it sparkles when touches my skin. It's cool at first touch.

Middle note:

The creamy vanilla and slight floral scent make the perfume sweet but ginger balance the scent out to make it sexy and seductive. I mentioned that it's cool at first touch but it gets a little warmer once it settled.

Base note:

Fresh powdery feeling just like you feel after you get out from the shower and towel dry yourself - and the feeling stay for hours. The base tone smelled and felt creamy but light and woody. It gives you a matte feeling instead of oily, which makes you feel secured that you're not going to mess all day.

Overall:

I like the scent of L'Homme by YSL. The scent is soft but masculine. It makes me feel young, fresh, clean, and rich. It gives you a matte feeling instead of oily, which makes you feel secured.

I can wear it day and night. And when I wear this perfume I feel sexy and it boosts my confidence. This is definitely a scent for a man with style.

I like that the smell is not too strong and does not project that much. I like the smell of the base tone and how it lingers over time like a fading smile leaving a sensual trail.

Although this scent is for men and very masculine, women might find this one attractive enough for them to wear it too.

It's expensive but it made me feel really luxurious when I wear it so it's good enough for me. And I will buy again if I ran out of it.

The longevity for me maybe is about five to six hours. I always keep a traveler's size with me just in case I need a little more.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

The Basics! Faceshapes - Know Yours in a Heartbeat!

…Close enough. The steps I’ll be telling you will help you determine the shape of your face easily. Keep in mind that this post is only about the common face shapes and how to determine what shape you have.

Below are the most common Faceshapes:

Oval Face Shape
Round Face Shape
Oblong Face Shape
Square Face Shape
Triangular Face Shape
Heart/Inverted Triangle Face Shape
Diamond Face Shape

(Click here if you want to go straight ahead with the steps)

I remember when I used to weigh 207 lbs and I am sporting a barber’s cut that I let grow for a while and man, I look like a walking plate or a walking “shiopao”. I realized too late that my haircut’s NOT flattering when I already saw photos of me spreading in Facebook on my friends’ timelines. It was an awful experience. NOT flattering at all.

Since I was a lot fatter the shape of my face is round. I should have sported something to help me elongate my face or something that would hide a fraction of the sides of my face to help me look a bit thinner (but of course, loosing weight and exercising is the best solution for that) instead of a barber’s cut.

Now that I lose weight the shape of my face is more oval.

I think most often, people forget the importance of the shape of the face and go on buying stuff, having haircuts, and applying make-up and still wondering why you don’t look good as you expect it to be. How about some jewelry looks good on you and some don’t? The reason is that the make-up you apply or the hairstyle you have might not look good on a square face but looks really good on an oval face. It goes with jewelry too.

It is important to know the shape of your face (or your clients in case you’re a make-up artist or your friend if you’re doing make-up for a friend) because the shape will help you know how and where to apply the make-up. Is the make-up making your face thinner or wider? Is it making you look younger or older? Is it showing the better version of you?

The shape of the face will also help you determine how to frame the face with eyebrows. It will help you where to apply the bronzers or the blushes or if they are needed in the first place. The shape of your face will also help you know if you need contouring or highlighting.

Not only that, determining shape of your face will help you choose the right haircut and hairstyle that will compliment you. And it will even help you find the best sunglasses and jewelries that you’d like to sport.

In short…

Knowing the shape of your face helps you save time wasted on applying and erasing make-up and applying again.

Knowing the shape of your face helps you save money over unflattering hairstyle, haircuts and accessories.

Knowing the shape of your face helps you determine the best make-up, hairstyle, haircut and clothing.

Knowing the shape of your face helps you emphasize the best feature you have and downplay the rest.

Knowing the shape of your face helps you understand what does and doesn’t look good on you.

Knowing the shape of your face helps you know the best way to look your best and feel confident about yourself.

To determine the shape of your face you need:

     01. A mirror, large enough to see your face up to the chest area;
     02. A shirt with low necklines to show your neck;
     03. Hair clips or something to tie your hair into a bun if you have long hair;
     04. Ruler or tape measure (optional);
     05: Pen and paper to jot down your measurements (optional);
     06. Well lit room with enough lighting to show your entire face without shadows (it’s best to do these steps in daylight as artificial light creates shadows that makes your face looks thinner).

Here are the steps to determine your face shape:

Step 01: Tie your hair back on a bun if you have a long hair or clip all the hair on the side and your bangs on the back. Make sure that your hair is neatly tied or clipped so that you can see your entire face and ears.

Step 02: Face the mirror and look at yourself. You should be at least at arms length to avoid distortion from the sides of the mirror. Don’t tilt your head sideways or downwards, as it will alter the way you look at your face. Do not smile or make unnecessary facial expressions, as these too will alter the shape of your face.

Step 03: (Optional) Using the ruler and tape measure and jot down on paper the measurements. Measure the following: a. The widest point of your forehead. b. The width of your face (the line from leftmost part of your left check towards the nose up to the end of your right cheek). c. The widest point of your jaw line. d. The length of your face (from the highest point of your forehead across the nose towards the end of the chin). See photo below:

Step 04: Answer this questions while you look at your face:

Q01: How wide is my forehead? Is it the same length with my jaw line? Is it wider or narrower than my jaw line?

Q02: How wide is the width of my face? Is it the same length with my forehead/jaw? Is it wider or narrower than my forehead/jaw?

Q03: How wide is my jaw line? Is it the same length with my forehead? Is it wider or narrower than my forehead?

Q04: Is your hairline round, narrow, square or has a dip on it?

Q05: Is your jaw line and chin square, pointed or rounded?

With the measurements and answers you got check the face shapes below to know what shape you’ve got:

Oval Face Shape:

You have an oval face shape if the width of your face is broader than forehead and jaw line.
Face is slightly longer than wide (meaning the length of your face is approximately equal to one and half times the width).
Jaw line is rounded, just right: not too narrow and not too wide.
Forehead is almost the same measurement with the jaw line.
May resemble inverted egg shape.

Some celebrities with oval face shape are Halle Berry, Megan Fox, Charlize Theron, Jessica Alba, and Beyonce.

Round Face Shape:

You have a round face shape if the width of your face is almost the same with the length with your face.

Jaw line is full and round.
Forehead and hairline are round.

Some celebrities with oval face shape are Kirsten Dunst, Ginnifer Goodwin, Jaime King, Kate Bosworth and Isla Fisher.

(click here to go back to top)

Oblong Face Shape:

You have a oblong face shape if the length of your face is longer (at least 60%) that the width of your face.
Looks like oval but oblong has more length (long vertical line) than width.
Forehead, cheeks and jawline are almost of the same width.
Jaw line is softly rounded.
Forehead and hairline maybe long.

Some celebrities with oblong face shape are Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwyneth Paltrow, Hilary Swank, Liv Tyler and Blake Lively.

(click here to go back to top)

Square Face Shape:

You have a square face shape if your hairline, cheeks and jawline are of approximately the same width.
The general shape of your face appears strong, angular and sculpted.
Jaw line is square and angular.
Forehead, and jawline are almost of the same width.
Full cheeks and is almost as wide as it is long.

Some celebrities with square face shape are Demi Moore, Angelina Jolie, Katie Holmes, Olivia Wilde and Rosario Dawson.

(click here to go back to top)

Triangular Face Shape:

You have a triangular face shape if you have narrow cheekbones and forehead with irregular hairline and wide jaw-line.
The width of the jawline is wider than cheekbones while cheekbones is wider than forehead.
Jaw line is the widest part of the face.
Facial structure narrows at cheekbones and forehead.

Some celebrities with triangular face shape are Ali Larter, Jennifer Aniston, Eva Mendes, Jodie Foster and Renee Zellweger.

(click here to go back to top)

Heart/Inverted Triangle Face Shape:

You have a heart face shape if the width of the hairline and forehead are wider than the lower part of the face.
Hairline is almost the same width with the forehead.
May also have a dip in the hairline (widow's peak). If you have no dip then your face shape can be considered as inverted triangle face shape.
Chin is pointy and is prominent.
Jaw line is angular/narrow and has wide cheeks.
Forehead is the widest part of the face and chin is the narrowest.

Some celebrities with heart face shape are Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon, Jenny Lopez, Christina Ricci and Alyssa Milano.

(click here to go back to top)

Diamond Face Shape:

You have a diamond face shape if the cheekbones are prominent and the widest part of the face.
Cheeks are often high and pointed.
Forehead is narrower than cheekbones and is almost of the same width as the jaw line.
Forehead tappers at the hairline
Chin is pointy and is prominent.
Jaw line is angular/narrow and has wide cheeks.
Face is longer than wide.

Some celebrities with diamond face shape are Elizabeth Hurley, Ashley Greene, Meg Ryan, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Madonna,

(click here to go back to top)

The face shapes mentioned above are the most common face shape. Of course, you may have a combination of these face shapes just keep in mind which part of your face is the widest and the narrowest so that you will have an idea of the general shape of your face.

The Bride! Mylene

Bride: Mylene Amorado-Sarmiento
Groom: Ruel Sarmiento
HMUA: Makeup Artistry by Hxero
Images: Antonio Amorado
Wedding gown and barong: Martin Sy
Location: Davao City

"One of the best experiences I've had. He shows professionalism in everything he does, and you could see and feel his passion in making people look great, inside-out. Thank you, Henry for making me look beautiful on my wedding day!" - Mylene Amorado-Sarmiento
Mylene and Ruel are one of my best friends. I've known them since college. We gotten to know each other because of our common love for arts. The three of us were part of the second wave of Art Co. (an art club in Ateneo de Davao University) when we were in college. It made me so happy that they asked me to be the best man and their make-up artist on their wedding day.

I created two looks for Mylene on her wedding day: her day look during the wedding ceremony and her evening look during the reception.

The couple even surprised me giving me an Urban Decay Naked 2 palette (which I really love). I used the palette on both of her looks. Aren't they the sweetest?

The wedding ceremony ended up late so we didn't have the chance to take photos of the couple so I had to recreate her evening look the next day for a photo shoot.

Check more photos below:

I am so happy that the couple and the guests like Mylene's make-up. Congrats again to the newly weds.

Makeover! Rhel Got Better!

Meet Rhel...

Rhel is a natural beauty. She has that girl next door look which makes your head turn towards her whenever she passes by.

For the longest time I wanted to give her a makeover because she's just so beautiful. And I'll surely regret not giving her one.

She just celebrated her 5th year with her current company so I decided to give her a makeover as a reward.

The look that i'll be giving her can easily turn from sweet to sexy by just changing the lip color.

Rhel's makeover are separated in several sections for easy navigation:

Rhel's Eye Make-up
Rhel's Brows
Rhel's Skin
Rhel's Lips
Rhel's Hair
Rhel's Style Guide

Keep on reading to know the step-by-step makeup application I did for her.
For Rhel's look I wanted to bring out her inner sexiness so I use eyeshadows with shimmer on in. I also put emphasis on her crease by darkening the area for that bombshell-like doe eyed look. Then i line her entire eye with black pencil and wing her gel liner out for that sexy cat-eye effect.

Since her eye is already making a bold statement I wanted to diffuse the look a little by putting soft coral color on the lips to maintain her sweetness.
For Rhel's look I mostly used NYX Professional Makeup Make-Up Artist Kit (shown in photo above).
To help you know which eyeshadow I used, I'll mark each one (check above photo) and call each eyeshadow by the mark for easy reference.

Rhel's Eye Make-up: Holiday Sexy Look!

Follow the steps below to achieve her eye make-up.

Step 01:
Prime the entire eye area (enclosed in white dots as shown in the photo above) with NYX Eyeshadow Base in Skin Tone using medium size concealer brush. Then gently pat as you spread the primer to even out the application.
Step 02:
Using synthetic blending brush spread Maybelline Color Studio Eyeshadow in Bad to the Bronze evenly on the entire eyelid (enclosed in white dots as shown in the photo above). Once the cream eyeshadow is dry, pat the lid with NYX Eyeshadow #B5 (choco-bronze shimmer) using Flat Eyeshadow Brush like Artnet 112 or Flat Blending brush like Mac 217.
Step 03:
Then line the upper lash line (enclosed in white dots as shown in the photo above) with Maybelline Expert Eyes Soft Khol Eye Pencil in Black. Smudge Eyeliner using brush like Fanny Serrano brush 14.
Step 04:
Then blend the line softly while adding it with NYX Eyeshadow #D3 (black shimmer) using small brush like MAC 228. Blend it with the eyeshadow on the lid.
Step 05:
Using MAC 219 pencil brush color the crease with NYX Eyeshadow #C5 starting from the outer eye area going to the inner eye area. Blend it out from the outer eye area towards the inner eye area.
Step 06:
Apply Fanny Serrano Honey Glitter individual eyeshadow (enclosed in white dots as shown in the photo above) starting from the brow bone and blend the eyeshadow (shimmer) towards the crease using blending brush like Artnet 154 or MAC 224.
Step 07:
Then line the lower waterline (enclosed in white dots as shown in the photo above) with Maybelline Expert Eyes Soft Khol Eye Pencil in Black.
Step 08:
Smudge the pencil that goes beyond the  waterline and add NYX Eyeshadow #B5 on the lower lash line (enclosed in white dots as shown in the photo above) using MAC 224 brush.
Step 09:
Then add NYX Eyeshadow #D3 on the outer lower lash line (enclosed in white dots as shown in the photo above) using small MAC 228 brush. Blend it gently with the eyeshadow applied on the lower lash line but stop before it reached the middle area.
Step 10:
Using MAC 201 eyeliner brush, apply Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Eyeliner in Black on the upper lash line (enclosed in white dots as shown in the photo above). Wing-out the gel eyeliner for that cat-eye effect.

Then Curl your eyelashes with Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler. Apply 2 coats of Maybelline The Magnum Volum' Express Waterproof Mascara (let the mascara dry for 3 to 5 seconds before applying the second coat) from roots to tips (do not wiggle when applying when you want a more natural finish). Add false eyelashes to your liking.

Below is the finish look:

For Rhel's Brows:

For her eyebrows I use wet n' wild ultimate brow kit powder in Ash Brown. I use the lighter one using MAC 208 brush. I first fill in the highest point of the arch towards the tip of the eyebrow before filling in the part near the nose.

Tip: Try to draw the shape first and check if you like it before putting more eyebrow powder. It's always easier to pack colors than removing the excess. I hope this helps.

For Rhel's Skin: Fresh Flawless Skin!

Note: Step 01 should be skin prep and I will write about this on separate blog entry.

Below are the steps to achieve "Fresh Flawless Skin":

Step 01: I prime the entire face using Revlon Photoready Perfecting Primer in 001.
Step 02: I use Dermacolor corrector/concealer on the under eye area to reduce the dark circles.
Step 03: I use L'oreal True Match Foundation in N7 on her skin. Slowly building the foundation up as needed using MAC 189 foundation brush.
Step 04: I put on concealer on under-eye area, corners of the nose, corner of the mouth and spot correcting on areas that need concealing using MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NC35. Make sure to blend it well with the rest of the skin.
Step 05: Then set the foundation and concealer with Ben-Nye Banana Powder.
Step 06: Then I put bronzer under her cheeks to bring out her cheek bones. Then I blend the upper edge where the bonzer ends with Maybelline Peachy Sweetie blush (peach colored blush) and added more blush from the apple of her cheeks towards the temples using Nars Yachio brush.

go back to top

For Rhel's Lips: Sweet Pout!

Note: You should put lip balm like Carmex after skin prep.

Below are the steps to achieve "Sweet Pout" lips:
Step 01: Line the entire lip area (upper and lower lips) with Etude House Lip Liner in Natural. Purse lips together to distribute lip liner evenly.
Step 02: Apply Kryolan Lipstck in #LF401 (nudel-coral shade). Purse lips together. Repeat this step twice or thrice depending on how long you want your lipstick will stay.
Step 03: Then add a coat of Kryolan Lipstick in #LC132 for that hint of orange. Purse lips together.
Step 04: Set lipstick by pressing tissue in between your upper and lower lips.
Step 05: Apply Etude House clear Lip Gloss in the Middle of your lower lip.

go back to top

For Rhel's Hair: "Upper East-side" Volumes!

Tip: Start with Hairstyling so that you will have enough time to set your hair rollers. Then finish hair after you finish applying your makeup.

This is similar to Michelle's hairstyle from previous makeover entry (click here). The hairstyle is versatile enough that can be worn whether you have long or shoulder length hair.

Below are the steps to achieve "Upper East-side Volumes" Hair Style:
Step 01: Spray hair with water to make it damp.
Step 02: Apply hair mousse.
Step 03: Blow dry hair using Babyliss hair blow drier and round large pig hair comb.
Step 04: Then separate hair into different groups. Then curl each group of hairs using Babyliss hair curler or Babyliss flat iron. After curling or ironing each group of hairs use rollers and roll each group and set it for few hours. Use large size rollers on hairs near the face and medium size rollers on the back.
Step 05: After you finished curling and putting hair rollers, spray it with Hair Spray to help the hair hold the curls.
Step 06: If the hair is all set, remove the hair rollers. Then slightly brush the hair with large paddle brush.
